Great food and ambiance

We went for lunch on a beautiful weekday and were happy to find an interesting Japanese food experience. Everything we ordered was superb, although a touch on the pricier side.
For the Foodie, great concept!

Great variety of Japanese Pub Food. Reminds me of Izakaya"s in Japan where Japanese people frequent most often. Food, service and ambiance what more can you ask for.
Awful food, Average Service, Delusions...in every case

I must say we were sorely disappointed. 6 of us went there on the recommendation of 1 of our party. It turns out she was the only one who liked the place. We shared around 8 appetizers. ALL accompanied by a nasty citrus infused soy that was strong and really bitter. No one was impressed by the appetizers. The Beef hot rock was neat-o to see, but the beef was mediocre quality, stringy & gristly in places--also dredged in lemon zest and some bitter seasoning that left a strange taste in our mouths. The Kobe beef roll was slimy and sticky with no flavor, the roasted veggies tasted burned, not roasted and the crab roll was nothing special either. most of the appetizers were flavorless without soy, but the soy did not compliment or add anything but a bitter SALTY taste to the food. The fish n chips was average, as was the tempura shrimp. My ramen soup bowl was Awful. Bitter and with a smoky aftertaste that was unpleasant--like burned mushrooms. We also had 3 deserts and none were great. The choc cake was dry as dust-even with the sauce to pour on it-and it tasted strongly of having sat in the freezer. The creme brule was the WORST i have ever had and tasted of the same unpleasant aftertaste that soup had. The granita was the least awful and did, at least, get the salty soy taste out of our mouths finally. My most vivid memory of the food will be SALT. I have never eaten a meal that left my toes swollen from salt and this place left me positively puffy--NEVER AGAIN, nor can we recommend it to any one else. There are too many outstanding Asian choices in the valley to suffer with the Paul Flemming concept of it. A month after the experience, we got together at another restaurant and Taneko came up. The words SOUR, BITTER and NASTY were used over and over again. None of us will ever go back
- Pros: None--except one guest's 5 year old gets a blast out of cooking on a Hot Rock--whoopee
- Cons: terrible food
Overpriced...underfed

We went to this restaurant with the hopes to be "wowed"...but we weren't...we didn't hate it either.
Overall, it was nice to try someplace new ...but we don't need to go back.
Our meal started with the hot rock kobe beef appetizer. The concept is neat and original but not pleasing to the tastebuds. The sauce used to dip the beef in created a sour flavor when used together.
We then asked our waiter if getting a side of seasoned vegetables and splitting a main course would be filling for the two of us...he assured us it would. Wrong! The seasoned vegetables were served on a coaster size plate while the free range chicken was more presentation than plate filling.
The food was ok overall...however by the time my dinner had settled I could have eaten a snack again.
My opinion: average food with unnecessary prices for such small portions.
Great Overall!

I LOVE THIS PLACE! The restaurant has contemporary Asian flair and the menu is wonderful. I love pretty much everything they offer on the menu but I would highly reccomend their BBQ Shrimp appetizer, fried rice and free-range chicken. Ask for the patio.....great place to people watch.
- Pros: Great food & ambiance.
- Cons: Gets busy during the rush hours so I would recommend reservation.
Lemon and Pepper
by ekps
If I were to describe the food at Taneko with two words it would be "lemon and pepper" literally every dish that my date and I ordered had one or both of these flavors--that overpowered the dish. We started with the Kobe Beef Hot Rock and it was covered in lemon zest making the beef taste weird and sour. The Spicy Tuna Roll was spicy--not from the traditional wasabi flavoring but because it was covered in black pepper--we had the same problem with the tuna tartare. We ended up sending back our sashimi plate after we tried two pieces that were the worst sushi we'd ever eaten in our entire lives. The tempura sampler came with a dipping sauce, again filled with the overpowering lemon zest and the scallops were overdone and chewy. The desserts were good though :) The environment was great and the service was attentive. However, the food was so awful and disappointing that I can't help but give it a negative rating. It's sad that a place with such great atmosphere and potential has such bad food. I'd go back for drinks and dessert.
- Pros: Ambience, Service
- Cons: Food
