FUN EXPERIENCE, GOOD FOOD

by baddfam at Citysearch

I have only been to this restaurant once but would recommend it to anyone. Even if it is just for the experience. The food was great. They seated us with in 10 min. on a Friday night around 7:30pm. They took our drink order right away and our appetizers as well. The sushi was great, they have there own Ah-So sauce that was awsome, I might just go back for that alone! The cook was funny, friendly and very entertaining.

Great show, so-so food...

by gibson_varcelone at Citysearch

I only ate here once, so I cannot speak authoratively. But maybe my opinion will matter to someone.

I went to this resturaunt during the busier hours on a Friday. I don't know if I had the fortune of choosing a slow weekend to come along when I did, but the wait only turned out to be fifteen minutes at the most. The resturaunt wasn't how I expected. I was hoping for a more traditional Japenese look and found it to be more along the "hip" style of design. (Not the kind of hip that I like, either). Even so, I was willing to look past that.

I've never really had a table top cooked meal before, and I've never sat at a table full of strangers before. It actually didn't seem that big of a deal sitting across from people I didn't know when the chef came out and performed for us. That is where the experience really shines. After serving us some delicious soup, setting our places, and taking our orders, the chef went to work.

The way to describe it is this: Bruce Lee meets cooking. The chef was very entertaining, performing multiple tricks that boggled my mind and made the whole presentation fun to watch. He was very kind, and I liked the idea that you could ask for more food if you wanted it or liked it. He handed out samples indiscriminately, perhaps as a means of showing what the others were missing.

While the preparation was amazing, I was dissappointed in the food. I had ordered the most expensive thign on the menu, which was basically a sample of every seafood morsel they had to offer. I had only tried lobster one other time, and that was at Black Angus. It was so good I craved it since. However, the taste was not light nor as savory at Ah-So. Perhaps it was because it was cooked more with soy or that much oil was used in the preparation. The part I looked forward to the most let me down.

In short, smile and be curteous to the chef for more samples. It is a good show, but the food might disappoint if your hopes are high.

  • Pros: A great table top show that probably ends up being the most of your tab...
  • Cons: Disappointing food save for the rice and soup...

RUDE!!

by sweetj85 at Citysearch

I used to eat here at least once a week.

For a friends birthday (party of ten) we decided to try out the cooking tables.

We went on a Friday night, expecting it to be busy. Were told the wait was about an hour. Which we were willing to wait. After an hour and half we were still waiting. Not once did a hostess come and let us know that the wait would be a little longer. The girls up front were too busy chit chatting, text messaging and eating fast food to care about customers.

After waiting almost two hours we asked to speak to a manager. That didn't help at all. No one seems to know what's going on there. Very unorganized.

Ended up leaving and will never go back.

great for a show

by muranodiva at Citysearch

I love taking dates here. If you don't know what to say the show will pretty much stop you or your date in mid sentence. The chefs are entertaining and funny and usually stop conversations I've tried to have. You can choose to sit at the bar, sit at a non cooking table, or a cook top table where the shows happen. If you choose the show table you could be sitting close to about 8 other people you've never met before, but I think it's worth it. The food is great and the service is usually pretty good, unless it's really busy and then it may be hard for you to get the refill you asked for for your drink. But overall it is all good.

Bad management, rude, loud - bad business

by sushisearching at Citysearch

Made reservations for our large group of friends from out of town. After half an hour still waiting (with reservations) we mentioned this to hostess who told us a little longer. An hour goes by and we tell her again of our long wait (and all pondering leaving at this point). She offers us the sushi bar, but we declined to wait for our table. The bar is bad for conversation (the place is super loud anyway) especially when you have friends you haven't seen in awhile. Not fun to scream down to each other at a bar. Finally after 1 hour almost 15 minutes, she seats us at a cooking table, when up front we said (and reserved) a place for SUSHI not cooked food. Once we sat down and reminded her of this again, she said we could not sit at a cooking table, we'd have to wait again. So we all get up, and you guessed it, waited another 15-20 minutes. Fuming at this point, we let the manager know how unhappy we were with the situation, the wait and complete indifference to our frustration. Didn't matter. The Hostess decides to sit us (again) at a cooking table. We looked at her funny and she smiled and told us to 'enjoy'. We spent lots and lots of money and left a good tip but never did she offer us any compensation, a free drink or even an apology or some kind of acknowledgement would've been nice. We all vowed NEVER to give them our money again. RUDE!!!

  • Cons: Loud, Rude hostess & manager, wait too long

Eyecandy and Great food on the West Siiiiiide!

by phoenixblack at Citysearch

Let me preface this review by saying that I love my girlfriend! But I have to admit that my head was on a swivel from the moment I walked into this place! There was some major talent in the house! The drinks are cheap but you better be prepared to drop a knot (spend a lot of money) if you want to eat here. However, the food is amazing. Our chef was very entertaining and the restaurant is perfect for groups. In fact, you'll have a better time if you go with family or a group of friends! The major drawback you will most likely need to valet park because the parking lot is small. It's nice to see that the West side is coming alive!!

  • Pros: great food, great atmosphere, entertaining chefs
  • Cons: valet parking, waitresses provide average service

You have to be kidding?!

by splattercell at Citysearch

The first thing I noticed when we walked in where stacks of extremely provocative magazines strewn about the benches & tables where families must wait to be seated. It pictured a model in a tiny bikini in a seductive pose. Next we were asked Sushi Bar or Dining Table? We had our 8 year old daughter with us so we opted for the table. Plus we know that Sushi Restaurants prefer that children not sit at the Sushi Bar so we thought we would be respectful of that. After a 15 minute wait we were led down a hall, only to have one of the employees come grab our hostess and direct us to a different table. It doesn't seem like the staff communicate very well with each other. We are then seated next to a group of approx 10 loud, partying college aged folks. I then noticed that we were in front of the cooking station so I politely asked if we could still have sushi were we were sitting? The waitress looked at me strange and said "You don't want cooking table?" Nope, we don't want cooking table. She said there was a 15 minute wait for dining table. I said I know, we've just waited 15 minutes for one. Noticing our frustrating she offered the sushi bar. Ok, here's the best part. After asking if they had any uni this evening, I was quickly told NO! Then another couple sat down next to us and seemed as if they knew the chef so they were quite cordial with each other. To our amazement, 20 minutes later, our neighbors were given a large plate of, you guessed it, UNI. We finished our meal (which the fish seemed a little better this time around but still very small portions) paid our check with a nice tip and headed out. When I asked to speak with the manager and told him of how ridiculous the whole night was, he replied to me "I know you from 3 years ago when you didn't like something I made you as the chef at our other location so I told my chef not to give you any." I wished him 'good luck' in the future because running a place like that? He's gonna need it.

Great place

by mrabanuelos at Citysearch

My wife and I are from San Diego and eat sushi regularly. Since moving here to Phoenix we had not found a GOOD sushi bar until now. Sushi is fresh and delicious. They have a chicken and steak dinner plate that is also very tasty. Very good place to have dinner and sushi.

  • Pros: Delicious, Fresh
  • Cons: Noisy
