Average Food, Snobby Service, Good atmosphere

Agree with several earlier comments about the food and service. We ordered 4 dishes and they looked very similar with only minor changes in the meats and sauces. Otherwise, looked pretty redundant -- in fact, couldn't quite tell the difference without the help of the server, which leads to the next point -- Snobby Service. We tried to ask about the dishes, but were summarily dismissed without an answer. Both the hostess and the server were EXTREMELY snobby, practically oozing haughtiness and attitude. I should point out that this sort of service was par for the course -- we noticed these ladies treating everyone disdainfully --- SO, DO NOT come here and expect to feel welcomed. Couldn't figure out the reason for the snobbiness, but look out, these ladies will give you the stink eye and roll their eyes every time you ask a question. Apart from the snobby service, the ambience was nice. It's a small house with cool artwork everywhere -- the cocktails are yummy too. If you can get over the less than friendly service paired with average food, it's a nice downtown option. The pricing seems reasonable too considering the portions.
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Not really Asian Food (an absolute farce to tout it as such), Snobby Service, No Parking

I've been to Fate twice and both experiences were favorable. The food and portions are great and inexpensive. I brought a friend there who was visiting from L.A. and they were thouroughly impressed. Thursday nights are great because they have a DJ (although the music is not abnoxious or loud). The atmosphere is unique and quiant.
- Pros: Ambience, Service, Veggie Friendly, Rice
- Cons: Coconut Curry Dish, Parking, Tea Selection
shy of mediocre

A wait with reservations! An uncaring and pretentious staff shrouded in confusion and disorganization. Our reservations were for 8p. We arrived early to enjoy drinks on the patio which is turned into a dining area at no specific time, at which all waiting patrons are moved off to the side to be forgotten. As the garage door is lifted on the tiny house-taurant two four-tops are quickly split into four two-tops allowing for a very close and unprivate dining experience. The food was bland and basic followed by a big check and a little unfortunate cookie that quite easily summed up the restaurant. In summary, our reservations guaranteed us a crowded, unpleasant dining experience inside an open doorway just six feet from our spacious waitng table on the patio. All of which could have been avoided if the managent were able to manage.

Fate is one of my favorite restaurants in the Valley. It's definitely Asian-fusion -- reflecting styles from a number of Asian cultures. Annoying authenticity Nazis in earlier reviews criticize this fact, but they're missing the point that this restaurant is about a very hip, relaxed, feng shui mood, and has excellent food to reflect that. The food matches the ambiance of the place: not for those that color inside the lines.
The food is delightful, with dishes ranging from the very subtly (but delectably) flavored Broccoli island -- perfect for timid-new-to-Thai or bland-midwestern palates -- to the roaring, excellent pad thai. The sauces are most assuredly handcrafted, and are where the chef truly shines. If you only like dry, unsaucy foods, this is NOT your kind of place! The coconut curry is a sea of coconutty goodness, and my favorite.
The service is very down-to-earth. Staffed only by those as hip as the food, they're like friends that bring you excellent eats, not obsequious servants. If you are a regular, they learn you quickly, remember your favorites, and treat you like a friend.
- Pros: Tasty sauces, Ambiance, Unusual wine/beer list, Friendly Staff
- Cons: Limited Parking, Small Capacity, Need for Reservations
Unauthentic, unappetizing food

I dined at Fate and was very disappointed to say the least. I tried a variety of dishes and was unimpressed with all of them. First of all, the Pad Thai was not the least bit authentic. It didn't even have a hint of peanut flavor, instead the spaghetti style noodles instead of egg noodles were coated in a red, flavorless sauce. Eew! Next, I tried the vegetable medley which was essentially some over-steamed vegetables and soy sauce instead of a proper dipping sauce. I thought the spring rolls would at least be decent due to the fact that those are difficult to mess up. Surprise, surprise...no flavor and lacking proper, crunchy texture. I will, however, give them props on their eclectic, international beer selection. If you are looking for a satisfying and tasty Asian fix I would avoid Fate altogether. It is overpriced and definitely not worth it!!!
- Pros: Proximity to downtown, Beer Selection
- Cons: Food!! Parking
OK Chinese for 20s something American who never been to Asia

To sum it up this is upscale Pei-wei with great atmosphere and better choice of drinks. it is not a true Asian food. Most of the dishes are just a stir-fry mixed of ready made sauce that loaded with MSG and perservatives. Each dish is just a repeataion of limited variety of vegatables with a different mixed of sauces. They also use hydrogenated oil to fry food. If you just want to eat out at a good setting Fate is not a bad choice. For a real Asian food, please look else where.
- Pros: Ambience, choice of drinks, young downtowners hang out
- Cons: Food, expensive
An art house with Far East flair turns Asian cuisine into an insomniac's dream.

In Short
Though surrounded by murky streets, this culinary diamond in the rough section of town is a mecca for a variety of culture junkies craving entertainment and delectable fare. The lively, downtown art-house crowd clusters in a dining room awash in dim blue light and Asian art while the relaxed patio atmosphere sustains post-1am club-hoppers. Daring appetites will relish the House Dynamite, infusing juicy chicken breast with a coupling of tart pineapple and heated chiles. To refresh the palate, the traditional Japanese ice cream is a top pick.

I don't like the reviewer's description of the location. It's not isolated on murkey streets...it's downtown. If you're not used to downtown, then you probably will get all nervous and skiddish about parking and walking to the restaurant. Then you'll be all offended that it's cramped inside and doesn't have that "new" feeling. If you're use to downtown and the Phoenix art scene, then you'll appreciate a great bite to eat served late.
Yeah, the servers sometimes do have an attitude, they're busy, it's small, people who know make reservations...people who don't know to make reservations complain thinking they'll get pushed to the front of the line if they try to make a point of it. Guess what, ain't gonna happen. All FOOD-related service is GREAT. They bring it the second it's done. It's the way you asked for it, your drinks come immediately, no one forgets about you, they check on you...
