This restaurant is very good I highly recommend it if you love authentic mexican food. The staff was excellent and the restaurant had a soft cozy atmosphere. The price is good not expensive.

Patrons of this upscale Tex-Mex chain choose from a wide variety of dishes made with fresh ingredients.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
The decor is the star attraction with colonial-style architecture, vibrant murals of Mexican life, and stone statuary resembling a wealthy landowner's rural hacienda. Entrees include Tex-Mex staples--enchiladas and fajita tacos--with a few surprises such as bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin and grilled mahi mahi. Sweets include the creamy caramel-flavored dulce de leche cheesecake and the rich chocolate flan drizzled with Kahlua cream sauce.

Great Food

by wooknmama at Citysearch

Abuelo's was recommended to us by our realtor when my husband and I were here from Oregon. We loved it!! The food was great, the service was awesome, and the atmosphere was beautiful. Since then we have taken my parents there when they came down to visit and our kids always choose to go there when we are trying to decide where to go out to eat. Everything that we have ever eaten was awesome. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Great food and service

by jdavid17 at Citysearch

My wife and I ate dinner here on March 30 of 07 and found the service prompt (even though the place was packed) and the food was outstanding. The chips are thin, the salsa flavorful, but not too hot, and the entrees were superb.

This has become our favorite Mexican restaurant here in the Phoenix area.

  • Pros: Great service, good portions, wonderful flavor
  • Cons: None on our trip

Horrible service.

by cjensen34 at Citysearch

My wife and I just walked out of this place in disgust. We came to Abuelo's because we heard the food was good. When we walked in we asked for a table for 2. The hostess we were speaking to asked the hostess to her right to seat us at table 82. We walked all the way to the back right hand side of the restaurant passing several people enjoying their meals and 2 empty booths on the way to a dark corner table. I asked the hostess if we could please be seated in one of the 2 unoccupied booths behind us which were better lit and away from the wait staff service station. She said very rudely.. "We don't have a server working that area.? I politely asked "Who is serving the people we passed in the booths right next to the one we are requesting?" She starred blankly and didn't answer. She then proceeded to grab the excess place settings and mumbled "Enjoy your meal" and walked away. Snobby service cannot be made up for by the food. Upscale or not, you don't treat new or return customers badly. There is no excuse for this hostess. My wife and I will NEVER again consider eating at this restaurant. There are numerous restaurants in the area that want your business and are willing to go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. Choose any of these restaurants to spend your money. Abuelo's is not worth your time. Date visited: 3/23/07 3:45PM.

  • Pros: Located close to the Peoria Sports Complex
  • Cons: Snobby service. Stuck up attitudes.

Good food and experience

by andreb11 at Citysearch

My wife, our two girls, (ages 3 1/2 and 1) and I decided to give this new restaurant a try and we are glad that we did. The ambience is wonderful and the facility and staff are very kid friendly. Our two girls were being a bit antsy, therefore, we were not able to fully appreciate the total experience. My wife ordered an enchilada plate which she stated was excelent; I ordered steak and enchilada, which was very good! During our visit they had just introduced a new appetizer (can't remember what the name is) that we ordered and it was yummy. The service was above average. We plan to visit Abuelo's again soon.

  • Pros: Kid friendly, good food and service
  • Cons: Just a bit pricey for family dining

From the colorful meals made with regional ingredients to the courtyard setting, this place exudes Old-World Mexico.

In Short
When it comes to Mexican food, the options are vast in the Southwest, but Abuelo's offers a refreshing combination of inventive foods in an atmosphere that was designed, inside and out, to replicate a rustic Mexican courtyard from many years past. The statues throughout Abuelo's are hand-carved by artists in the stone-carving villages around Guadalajara, Mexico, and the murals, artifacts and lush greenery add to the faux historic charm.

Fantastic!

by aztank at Citysearch

This place simply rocks! The MOST expensive platter is under $19...a steal for food of this quality! The house specials are expecially worthy. Los Mejores De La Casa is divine and the Papas Con Chile is excellent! Unfortunately you can only make reservations for large parties and this can lead to an hour+ wait..especially in winter. So don't be too hungry when you arrive!

  • Pros: Great Food, Excellent Margaritas, Affordable
  • Cons: Long Wait, Understaffed Bar

by kknowsfood at Citysearch

the accustics are awful. could not hear the person across the table for me, but i could hear every other conversation in stereo. the sheer volume of the restaurant is enough to send anyone to the audiologist. service....bleh. but if i had to work in that environment, maybe i too would be so over-stimulated i too could not give good service.

  • Cons: food - mediocre, marg's - yuck, loud and too bright

Abuelo's is the way to go

by joewine at Citysearch

Having lived in the Phoenix Metro area since 1979, my idea of "Mexican Food" was your typical chain restaurant. I was skeptical the first time I was invited to go, but that one time was all it took. Their margaritas have liquor in them, their chips are thin and crispy, and the salsa is the best I have ever tried. The beautiful decor and original music make for a wonderful ambience. The service we received rivaled some of the best restaurants in town. I have dined there at least once a week since they opened in Peoria. They also opened by some friend's house in Chandler and also in Scottsdale.

  • Pros: Fresh food, Delicious margaritas, Super service
