Only 'REAL' NY Pizza I've found in AZ

by Phantomshark

Well, after trying every pizza place in a 20 mile radius, I have to say Ray's is the only place that could last 5 minutes if it was located in NY. The crust is as right as it is possible to get without using the NY water, and they use real pizza sauce and real pizza cheese. It's a LONG way from my house, but any time I am remotely in the area I have to stop in.

Oh, and they give you the whole NY experience, down to the rude employees behind the counter. I think it's half real attitude and half show, but the whole package really makes me homesick for NY. :)

  • Pros: Great food, brightly lit
  • Cons: Employees attitude can be a bit of a put-off unless you take it as part of the package

RUDE MANAGER!!!!!

by kschwink

I moved to Scottsdale from San Diego about a couple months ago. I happened by Ray's one day so I went in to try the pizza. It was good. Although not consistant. Sometimes undercooked and the dough was doughy, and sometimes a little over cooked. Other things I noticed is that the slice sizes were not consistant. Sometimes you would get a much smaller than usual, and still have to pay full price. The biggest thing I noticed is that the manager and the employees are not very friendly and don't seem to appriciate your business. That didn't sit very well with me. Well after eating their several times it happened, I walked up to the ray's at Pima & FLW to have a slice for lunch, and there was a group high-school aged girls in line in front of me waiting to order pizza. They were all discussing what they wanted to order, and one of the employees behind the counter motioned to me to take my order so I said a slice of pepperoni, and gave him a twenty. Then the manager stepped up to the counter and rudely told me to go to the back of the line. I tried to explain to him that his employee asked me to order since the group of high-school girls where not ready to order. He for some reason didn't want to listen to reason, so I told him to give me back my #@!"%#!#! Money! He hesitated, and I was about to jump over the counter and beat him when gave me back my money. I stormed out of that place and will never return!

Well today I stopped in to New York Pizza Dept. for the first time. I heard it was a little greasy, and it was, but not too greasy. The dough or crust is thin. A little thinner than Ray's. The pricing is cheaper than Ray's, and I love the atmosphere. The employees seem to be very well trained unlike Ray's employees. I think Ray's has a

high turn-over, because I saw different employees working the counter on each visit. I guess no one want to work for that disgusting manager. Folks take my advice, and stay away from Ray's. Their pizza is not worth the grief!

  • Pros: decent new york style pizza
  • Cons: Horrible customer service- they don't deserve your business!

Great Pizza but Crazy Pizza N-zi (they don't let you type the a?)

by hotlady1980

I have to agree with the other guy who wrote that there was a pizza n-zi working there (N. Scottsdale location). There is DEFINETLY a very rude and psychotic man that works there who if God forbid is working alone will make you wait 10 minutes to order while he finishes wiping down the counter and then makes you wait another 10 minutes to pay if you use a credit card (which he doesn't like... I guess bring cash). DO NOT ask for Olives on the side or he may not sell you the pizza at all. I made that mistake and he informed me there were no sides but he will sell me an olive for 10 cents each. Then when I said that was fine and handed him my credit card again... he made me wait another 5 minutes to pay. He apparently had to go back and dry all the countertops immediately prior to taking the card which I was trying to hand him. Then when he finally came back he said that I could not use the credit card for anything under 2 dollars. I told him I didn't have cash and he told me that was fine but I would have to buy atleast 20 olives! Totally crazy man... I just wanted a couple I told him and he blankly stared at me. I was scared and just wanted the damn pizza and to get out of there... I had been there trying to pay for over 20 minutes and the pizza was getting cold. In all fairness everybody else there has always been more than pleasant and it is just one psycho man (who I think is the owner). l love that they have huge big slices (which you can buy by the slice, although it doesn't taste as fresh). Also if you are use to sliced olives on your pizza they don't do that... they only have huge whole olives which they will put on but I don't recommend it (it's disgusting). So I guess bring your own or just do pick ups like I do=) You know it has to be good pizza because I had swore I was never going back because of my experience but eventually gave in when I couldn't find any better. Good luck!

  • Pros: delicious pizza and great price
  • Cons: Crazy pizza n-zi

Beware of the Pizza Nazis!

by 1twoone2

Ray's pizza certainly does live up to its reputation of serving authentic New York style pizza, but inside the pizza joint lives the mythological Seinfeldian Pizza Nazi. The only kind of customer that is allowed into the store is that of the domesticated, yielding customer, who will not cause any trouble in the shop.

Here are some dining tips:

1) Do not look the employees in the eyes.

2) Never wear hats or sunglasses in the store.

3) When done ordering, move two paces to the left to the cashier stand and wait for the cashier to arrive.

4) Never mutter the word "Seinfeld."

the best pizza on the west coast

by vbarberio

I have been going to several pizza places since moving here from NJ 9 yrs ago, this place is by far the best pizza I have ever had in AZ. The atmosphere is great and the employee are all family related in one way or another. They treat you really great. I personally go to the one on 7th st and Bell. They are the best and there prices are really worth it. No other pizza can compare.

Pizza right off the boat!

by dyminz66

Went to Ray's pizzaria. Right away I felt at home on the east coast The italian accents of the employees, the humor, and the smell! Oh my goodness, this is a real New York City pizzaria. I got a pepperoni large and 25 wing special. The pizza was so good I bring all my clients from back east to eat, it brings us all home. It is like a pizza stop on the way to a yankee game. Anytime I am home sick thats where I go. Thank you for not short cutting the sauce, it makes for big flavor. Eat pizza anywhere else, "FORGET ABOUT IT !"

  • Pros: employees, food, quality
  • Cons: none
