Good food, but not worth the effort
by trenchnurse
If you work downtown and have the time, this place would be worth the trip through the construction and lousy parking. But if you work outside of downtown (like me), it isn't. The food is great and served quickly. But the place is so small and crowded during operating hours, it takes away from the experience. This place would make a killing on game nights, but they are only open during the daytime. Best for the occassional trip rather than a regular place to eat.
- Pros: Taste, friendliness of staff
- Cons: Crowds, parking, construction outside, open daytime only
This has been a downtown institution since God was a boy.

In Short
Customers who pay at the register are put on the honor system: They tell the cashier what they've eaten and she rings it up. Weekends, the place transforms into Lolo's (Mrs. White's grandson), a modestly furnished late-night stop for hearty helpings of fried chicken, waffles and smothered chops.
Just the best food around!

Mrs. White's serves up excellent home-cooked food such as pork chops, meatloaf and fried chicken in a setting that probably hasn't changed since it opened in 1964. Don't expect fancy service... servers take your order and bring your food, period. However, I'd hate to be interrupted by an over-talkative waiter while I have my mouth full of sweet-potato pie. Also, don't sit around waiting for a menu. What there is is written on the wall, or if you're nearsighted or a little slow, your waitress can give you the run down. Bring cash, too, as Mrs. White doesn't accept anything else.
Try the pork chops, cabbage, and black-eyed peas, and you'll know why so many Southern boys love thier mamas.
- Pros: Great food, Celebrity sightings, Free downtown parking
- Cons: Indifferent service, Crowded at peak times, Cash only

Fried Chicken is highly over rated. I have had better fried chicken at a steak house.
- Pros: not a chain, nice staff
- Cons: fried chicken, price value
