Food is authentic and good, but service is really bad.. I'm kind of in the middle on this one. I like the food alot, however the service is less than par. I used to visit this establishment at least once a week. Until about 6 months ago, when seated it would take about 15minutes for anyone to even come over to the table to say hi, drink order, go away or anything else. I dine out everyday and the worse thing that can happen is lousy service. The last few times I tried again, about once a month, it continued and I have deceided not to return again. This one is crossed off on my dining list.
Mexican food worth trying. We were very pleased with X Tapa Joe's the first time we tried it about 9 months ago. Since then we've been back three times and even brought out of town family and we've never been disappointed. Thank goodness our first try was with the new owner/management. The margaritas were good, not fantastic, but a great value during happy hour. Food was very tasty and good-sized portions. Best of all was the friendly and accommodating service without being overbearing. The location is sort of weird and hard to find off of Miller and Thompson Peak Pkwy, but maybe that's just because of all of the construction. I would rank this Mexican restaurant in the top 20% in the Valley if you take into account the whole package--margaritas, two kinds of salsas (mild and medium hot), entrees (choice, taste, and price), decor, and service. Well worth a try!
We were not disappointed!!. This California girl now lives in Canada and misses her Mexican food. We first visited X Tapa Joe's three years ago. When we visited again in September 2007, with friends, we were not disappointed. The Mexican food is terrific, served piping hot and had large portions. The waiters were attentive. The house margarita was smooth and not for the faint of heart! We'll be back next time we're in Phoenix. Thanks, X Tapa Joe's!
Now Better than ever since the new owner took over!!!!. This is a wonderful place to dine now that the previous owners are gone. The new owner is not as cheap as the old owner and he is willing to spend time and money making the place a real pleasure. The food is better now than before and the service is better because we can eat in peace without the previous owners daughter wanting to stop and talk to us all night. Thank god that family is gone and the new guy is there !!!!
Pleasant... First class Service.
This place was recommended to us by a friend, and we were not disappointed.. The service was great, the food was excellent and can't o wrong with the atmosphere... just a pleasant place to spend an evening...
I would for sure recommend this place...
Terrible Customer Service, No Common Decency, Food Bland. We have tried twice to enjoy the x-perience, but, have been greatly disappointed. The food is like any other half rate excuse for Mexican food, only twice the price. Too much cheese, not enough flavor. The service is spotty at best, be prepared to wait a while for your food - I think this is a ploy to sell more drinks while you wait. Fish dishes certainly are not fresh. Attitude of the manager, Melissa, is deplorable - please go back to NYC - we don't want your attitude here in Arizona. The porch is nice, and location easy to find.
Uncredulously Poor Customer Service, not Once but Twice.
My wife and I have given XJ's three tries and we have finally decided that, although very conveniently located for us, we will not be dining there any more, ever.
It all came down to service (or lack thereof) and how we were treated by the owner and management.
Our first experience was OK enough. The food was OK, location convenient and atmosphere very nice. I had the Mexican lasagna which was different and quite tasty. My wife had a lackluster custom shrimp burrito.
The downhill slide started with the second visit. We arrived with our two infant children (both sleeping) and went through the process of ordering drinks and dinner. After 15 minutes of eating chips, we asked about the status of our order and were told it was coming. 25 minutes later, the folks who arrived after us are getting served, again we were told "almost ready." 45 minutes everyone is eating around us, the manager has been brought into the equation. After 50 minutes the manager acknowledges our order has been lost, and that they will get us something immediately. 65 minutes, still no food, children are awake, same promises from staff; we walk out.
Now we are batting .500. We had friends come to town who used to live in Scottsdale and they wanted to eat at XJ's. We were hesitant, but figured we'd give it one last try.
I cannot go into all the details of visit #3, as it would take too much space, but, the cascading series of events are almost too incredulous to believe, unless I witnessed it myself. Let me just ask you a question - if a server spilled an entire margarita (and their margaritas are huge) over your friend's wife, what should they expect as fair compensation for this? Complimentary drink? Drinks for the table? Dinner? XJ's answer: nothing. When the manager got involved: she took a drink off the bill. When escalated to the owner: pay for dry cleaning. The fact that our friends had to fight to with the staff to even gain this concession did it for us.
Excellent Restaurant. The servers, bar tenders and owners are all 1st rate. The food is excellent and not served in a trendy North Scottsdale way, you actually get a full meal and not a designer taco! Cadillac Margs are out of this world and sold by the pitcher too! They listen to your comments and try to please their clients ie.. they now carry my favorite American Beer. Great patio dining.
North Scottsdale little secret. My wife and love this place and have for over a year. Family run and operated. Wonderful service and food. We would not eat Mexican food anywhere else..
