Editorial Review for AZ 88 – by Brian Obermiller
In Short
Steep drink prices not withstanding, this contemporary restaurant is the darling of Scottsdale socialites of all ages. An expansive patio overlooks Civic Plaza's fountain and greenery, but the main attraction is the sleek, white-washed dining room featuring an open floor plan, picture windows, cool washrooms and quirky modern art (ever see a mannequin-head Christmas tree?). The attentive staff and an affordable menu of sandwiches, salads and appetizers make "AZ" the ideal pre- or post-bar stop.

We decided to go AZ 88 after a recommendation from a friend. The setting is beautiful and the decor is modern and hip. We were unsure of where to go to put our name on this list and others were waiting in chairs in the front of the restaurant. I had my boyfriend approach one of the waiters to ask, and he directed him to a blond woman and she promptly pointed a table out for us. It seems like they don't have a set system for seating, so knowing this might be helpful on your first visit. They were busy and the tables are kind of jammed together, but comfortable enough. I didn't order a cocktail but a friend had a Mai Tai and wasn't thrilled about it. I ordered their only Riesling on the menu and it was delicious. The burgers were tasty, but the fries were my fav! They are waffle fries and the sauces served with are great.

My friends at work suggested that I go to AZ88 for their awesome drinks. On a Saturday night my husband and I decided to go. I was exciting to go and was really hungry. As we walked up we saw the crowd and figured that there would be a wait to get a seat. We were both willing to wait . As we approached the host, he gave us a blank stare like "what are we doing here? " I was instantly turned off but still wanted to eat there. So I said " seating for 2 please". He looked around and said " ok, go in there (pointing into the dining area) and find a lady with a white shirt and black tie (mind you, thats their uniform so they ALL were wearing it) named Ally, she will find you a seat" I was furious. I couldnt believe he expected me to walk around the dining room in a sea of people to find my OWN hostess !! I was so upset I said " never mind, i dont even want to eat here anymore." This was my first impression of AZ88 and it was NOT a good one. Dont think i'll try again.
Pros: Attractive Setting
Cons: Horrible Host
