Good Lunch Spot. Saw the Rusty Spur on Channel 8's Check Please program so we went for a look. Small place but loved the vibe. Since we went for lunch we didn't have to deal w/ the reserved table nonsense. It was nice to have some entertainment..good singer. The bartender/ waitress could have been a tad friendlier. The Spur Burger was great but too big for me. The only negative about the burger was the bun..need something a bit sturdier to stand up to the size of the burger..good fries..nicely seasoned..would definitely return when we're in the Valley..
Not the place to go in Old Town. My wife and I stopped in the Rusty Spur recently after hearing it was a fun country bar. In reality, its just a poorly run dirt hole that tries to pass itself off as a 'historic landmark'. The bartenders were friendly, but a man who they told me was the owner was belligerently drunk, and we overhead him making very racist and inappropriate comments. My wife was completely offended, and we will never go back. Old Town Scottsdale has a lot of great bars and restaurants to offer, but this place definitely isn't one of them.
Great tiny little bar!.
After reading the all the comments, it seems you either love this little tiny bar or hate it. We felt compelled to see for ourselves so we stopped last Saturday night. We had a completely different experience with the ?reserved table? than the comments I had read. There was a lady and a gentleman sitting at the table and when we asked if we could sit, she told us there were more people coming but until then we were more than welcome to sit. As soon as another table opened up, we grabbed it. Throughout the night we watched the table out of curiosity. We couldn?t believe how fast the table filled up and how many people they got around it and quickly understood why the table was reserved. This table is obviously well known because as people walked in, they made a point of stopping at that table to say hi to everyone who sat there. As a small business owner myself, I say kudos to the owner for reserving a table for their regulars.
Regarding the band, they rock this little place. Their mixture of county, rock and roll, their own music, not to mention some of the ?off beat? songs was absolutely entertaining. The lead singer was hilarious and tells you right off the bat, you don?t like it, don?t stay because the place gets packed! You may think this as rude but oh wow was he dead on. By 9:30, this place was standing room only with everyone having a great time. When you see people moving their feet to the beat, clapping, singing along and dancing, you know they?re doing something right. Way to go!
In ending, again I say, you are either going to love this tiny bar or hate it. You certainly get a variety of people from ASU College students to the much elderly who all seem to enjoy the atmosphere and the entertainment. If you?re looking for a nice quiet night, this is not the bar for you. If you are looking for a romping good time, check out the Rusty Spur Saloon!
Best old time scottsdale cowboy saloon. if you want to know how scottsdale felt a 100 years ago step into this small quaint bar. music all day and all night. good drinks, fair prices and the most mouth watering cheeseburger i've ever had. simple food but oh so good! they only serve till 4pm. the main band starts at 8pm with no cover and they dont raise the prices (what a concept). get their early, it is small and very popular. its a must experience.
Don't sit at the first table inside the door.
The other reviews about a group of regulars having a secretly reserved table just inside the front door are right on.
If the owner wants to reserve a table for favored customers, he should paint a reserved sign onto the table top so tourists know they'll be asked to move about 7 pm--just after the place becomes standing room only.
Anybody know some transgender burly black biker attorneys who'll file a suit when they're asked to move?
The band is way too loud for this tiny hole in the wall.
NOTHING BUT GOOD TIMES....
I am from Canada and have friends who own a condo in Mesa. They had been raving about the Rusty Spur for years and they talked it up so much that I had to go and check it out. I certainly was not disappointed and have returned every year since. The staff are very friendly, the band is awesome and the "regulars" made me feel right at home. The first time I went was in May and when I returned in September that same year, the bartender and the "regulars" actually remembered my name! It is quite small but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character.
The Psychobilly Rodeo band are talented, full of energy and put on a very entertaining show. When our group from Canada are there they "personalize" songs for us, come and chat with us between sets and have even let a few of our more talented friends play a song or two with them.
I love the "Spur" and can't wait to go back again this year!!
Great Band on Thursday, Friday and Sat. nights and good music throughout the week, too!! Lots of fun, friendly people.. Five years ago, my husband and I were visiting Az from the mid-west. We happened to be driving through Old Scottsdale and needed a cool drink. We heard music and went into the Rusty Spur. What a great experience!! It was 3 pm when we got there and we didn't leave until 1 am!! We had so much fun. The "regulars" were very nice to us and made us feel welcome. Psychobilly Rodeo Band was playing that night. They were so good and funny, too. Jimmy, the lead singer is so entertaining!! Yea, he might tell people to tip the band, but they ARE playing for tips and they are worth a good tip! We loved the "Spur" so much that we decided we would move out here. Now we can go there every weekend. Just remember, if they are so crowded, they must be doing something right! The bartenders and the owners are great people, too. Give the "Spur" a chance and you'll see what I mean.
The Rude,Rude West. I took some out of town friends to old town Scottsdale for shopping and then a drink at the local water hole as the Rusty Spur was once know. What a Rude awakening, once the band started we where asked to move as the table was reserved, sorry did not see a sign ( there wasn't one) . We where told they didn't need one as they owned the place... I guess they don't need the business from the local's... Not sure who the owner's are but can bet not originally from Scottsdale..
Ditto on Avoiding this DUMP!!!. Packed in like sardines, listening to bad music and the regulars are disgusting! The band BEGS and intimidates you for tips. I also had a conversation with the owner who was arrogant when we were told we could not sit at a table any longer because it was suddenly reserved for someone else! I don't mind being told that a table is reserved ahead of my sitting there, but if your butt has been sitting there for over an hour and you've been buying drinks the whole time, and they suddenly walk up and kick you out of your seat, it is a bad business practice. The owner said "I don't care, I own the place" This gross imitation of a cowboy bar has no resemblance to the once fun, cozy Old Scottsdale bar it once was. My money walks!
Avoid this place like the plague!!.
I was in downtown Scottsdale when I stumbled across this bar. I decided to go in for a drink and a bite to eat.
As soon as I walked in I noticed a funky smell...like feet! The place was absolutely filfthy and had a layer of thick dust everywhere like it hadn't been cleaned in years! The band was deafening and the place itself was tiny, dingy and suffocating.
The bartender treated us like we were imposing on her day and ignored us for about 10 minutes and was rude when we asked for service. When we spoke to the owner he was extremely rude and cocky and basically told us that he made a lot of money and couldn't care less if he had our business or not.
I could NOT believe how they treated us!! We were nice and polite the whole time, though lord knows why.
I also noticed the owner talk to other people in the same manner before we walked out. If he does not need the business then I suggest that everyone avoid this place like the plague. If you are in downtown Scottsdale I would recommend Karsons which is a few doors away. Much nicer!!!
