In Short – The young and chic, business types, and mature patrons of the area galleries gather under the star-studded ceilings of this transcontinental eatery. From its focus-of-the-room bar to the watch-the-world-walk-by window tables, this place exudes an upbeat, creative energy. The varied menu sports a wealth of gourmet ingredients, albeit at the expense of locally grown items. At nearly every table, a Stetson chopped salad (arugula, smoked salmon, Israeli couscous, sweet corn, marinated tomatoes, "trail mix" of asiago, pepitas and black currants, pesto ranch dressing) is being…
Good food, icy 'tude
by kevinpa2215
Food is good nouvelle, for the price it should be. Stetson salad was inventive and tasty. Memorable more for the pretentious attitude, rich in every gesture, every look and tone and grimace. The greeter did the standard ask if we had reservations, exaggerated pondering of where-oh-where we should be seated in the at-10% capacity restaurant. Certainly not those tables in the light and airy space, bingo, the most desolate, darkest corner of the room. Kind of funny at first but because the server was just as condescending and made good food harder to swallow. Probably (never say never) wouldn't go back because of the ice.
- Pros: Stetson Salad
- Cons: Attitude from the word go
THE STETSON SALAD RULES!
by marpop
Every time I'm in Phoenix, i have to visit Cowboy Ciao. I've been coming here for the past 6 years and I've never been disappointed. By far, my favorite thing is the Stetson salad. Not only do i love the way it tastes, but the way it's presented is fabulous. All the ingredients are neatly placed in a row on the salad plate -- smoked salmon, chopped arugula, roasted sweet corn, pepitas and cous cous -- and then the server gingerly mixes in the creamy pesto dressing and serves it to you. ABSOLUTELY YUMMY!! It's such a cute ritual. I love the creative food combinations (peanut brittle & bacon, for instance) and the cocktail options and wine flights are fantastic. During lunch the scene is very casual but once dinnertime rolls around, the lights turn down & the noise goes up. Admittedly the last few times my usual dessert -- the poto' chocolate (thick chocolate at the bottom of a cappuccino cup topped w/cream infused w/chili powder) -- has been a letdown. Even so, I highly recommend this place - -it's consistently outstanding.
- Pros: The food, the drinks
- Cons: They don't have a location in L.A.!!
The Details on Cowboy Ciao
What to Drink:
While it's fun to browse the quip- and quote-filled, nearly 2,000 selection wine tome, a simpler way to sample is a flight of three, 3-ounce pours.
When to Go:
Dinner reservations are a must--especially during ArtWalk Thursdays. Some dishes, or variations, are available at lunch, when it's usually less crowded.
