Don't let the minimalist location fool you! I've been a loyal customer at Pesto's for well over 10 years. They have grown from a family pizza and pasta joint into a full out wine bar with a great atmosphere, yummy appetizer and dinner offerings and entertainment! If you enjoy hearing a little jazz and watching some seasoned musicians having a great time while they're playing, all while sampling some good wine and food, this is the place to go. The only downside is they are starting to outgrow their space a bit so finding a seat during happy hour and weekends can be a challenge. Go early! Also, the staff is pretty friendly and the faces don't change every time you go so it makes it extra comfortable.

FROM A REAL CUSTOMER AND NOT AN EMPLOYEE. I don't claim to be an italian food guru but I know a good meal at a good price when I see/taste one. Unfortunately, the cost/taste of Pesto's pizza and other food they serve did not match what I've had in the past. The food was not horrible by any means but it wasn't spectacular either. I felt the food was mediocre and definitely over priced. To top it off the waiters and waitresses were not knowledgeable of italian food let alone their own menu. They only have 2 types of pasta to choose from and their "house" sauce is nothing more than tomato sauce and a little spice. The pizza was again, not horrible, but very small for the price. All the portions are tiny for the amount they charge.

Additionally, in my opinion, an italian food restaurant should know how to make a proper meat ball. Not only did they serve a smushed piece of leftover meatloaf together, but they cut it in half and called it "two meatballs." This is a good restaurant for someone that does not know what italian food is supposed to taste like. Also for someone who doesn't mind wasting $30 bucks for 2 people to have a 1/2 decent dinner. I don't know if they've changed owners or prices/portions since the last reviews, but as of today they were disappointing. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends or family.

What we ate:

Spaghetti w/ house sauce and "two" meatballs $11.75

Small pesto pizza $10.50

Hidden gem for all transplanted Nyers. Pestos is great. I have never had a bad pizza here. i was surprised by the one womans review that is was bad. Perhaps they had an off night, even though I have eaten here a lot and have never experienced an off night for them. Service has always been good. They actually have a wondeful catering service too. They catered my brothers wedding/rehearsal dinner and it was like being back in NY. The sausage and peppers brought tears to my eyes-LOL! Now if you don't like Ny style pizza, you won't like it, so that is that. Yes Ny pizza is greasy that is the joy of it! Water is water not gaseline so that was a weird thing to say! I drink tap here all the time and it is fine. It is not Ny tap water but it is better then most Phoenix establishments. This is a hidden gem but I don't want everyone to discover it so I don't have to wait for a table! But seriously try it and make your own mind up. HAPPY EATING. MANGA!!!!!!

Ps- I forgot to ask. is San Francisco know for Pizza? They are known more for great French food. When I go there i get things like Duck L'Orange and other FAB food but I don't think of it as a city that knows pizza! I am sure they probably have tons of places that have great pizza but Ny and Chicago are American cities known for good pizza. i didn't see the connection on the last persons comment. Italy has complete different pizza. They don't even make it the same way we do in America so you can't really compare the two. We have Americanized the Pizza in our country. Most people in Az are looking for our version of pizza not Italies. In fact when most Americans go to Italy they are shocked when they order a pizza and claim they don't like it because it is so different.

The worst pizza in Arizona and a rip off to boot!. This pizza was terrible, bad crust and soggy in the middle. Hubby and I have eaten pizza all over Italy, New York and San Francisco and Pesto's is nothing but BAD Arizona pizza. If the guy behind the bar is Sicilian then he should be ashamed of the pizzas they turn out in this place. La pizza di Pesto's fa schiffo. Ask him to translate that one. There is NOTHING Italian about this pizza, it's one step up from Domino's or Papa Johns. I ordered a side of meatballs and cheese and they gave me ONE lousy meatball with a scoop of ricotta and charged $7! The food was terrible and the wait staff was rude. You'd be better off going to Classic Italian Pizza on Rural and Baseline, at least their pizza tastes good even if it is expensive. Sometimes you get what you pay for, clearly the case at Pesto's, cheap ingredients, bad pizza, bad service.
