Phoenix >Food & Dining > Sakana Restaurant
Poor selection of rolls...poor quality. The selection of rolls was terrible...maybe 5 specialty rolls? Rolls are very americanized and not traditional sushi...every single roll has mayo in it. Not sure why people have rated it so highly. My guess is that people from Phoenix have no clue what sushi is and/or should taste like? I'd search elsewhere....I sincerely hope there is a real sushi place in PHX as this is a pathetic excuse for one.
Yummy yummy!. While visiting another establishment in the same strip mall, I saw people lined up outside of this particular restaurant for it to open... What on earth could be so special about this strip-mall sushi joint, I asked myself? I went back for lunch a few days later and had easily the best sushi in Phoenix. That was a couple years ago now and I keep going back for my sushi fix. Fresh, melt-in-the-mouth fish, fast and friendly service even when they are slammed. The lunch menu is the best deal in town. If you love sushi, you must pay Sakana a visit.
Best sushi value in town-and GREAT sushi!. Best sushi in town? I think I would have to say yes---and FAR more reasonable than RA. No question this is our favorite place in town and my wife and I are sushi FANATICS! We have had the best sushi in San Diego, Seattle, Vancouver BC, Tampa, and in resorts in the Caribbean and in Mexico. This place ranks with the best of them!
One of my favorite sushi bars in the valley!. Found Sakana when I first moved here in 2003 and find this to be one of the best in the valley! Their lunch specials feature great food with terrific value (I usually order the sashimi). Miso soup and salad are delicious, but I always request dressing on the side as the salad is usually served drenched with it. Rainbow rolls and baked mussels are exquisite. Blue fin tuna, a rarity in most sushi bars, is sometimes served here, so be sure to order specials that feature it. Used to like their spider rolls (soft-shelled crab), but found two other sushi bars (Kyoto and Fish Market) that serve them WITHOUT the sweet eel sauce.
One notch above Truck Stop Sushi. The single worst sushi experience of my life was had at Sakana. I was Frankly shocked to see it listed as the best of anything. My date and I stood for 10 minutes before we were seated, and once seated it was another 20 minutes before we had drinks. All the while we were seated next to an unused door which let in a cold draft (being winter). Once our food was ordered (5 or 6 types of sushi) we waited for over an hour. I would have left long before the food arrived if it hadn't been for my date wanting to stay. It only got worse once the sushi arrived. The fish was tough and the cuts were crude, and the rice was dry and the rolls disintegrated almost immediately. I would recommend that anyone who enjoys good service or good sushi stay far away from this restaurant.
Great Sushi. I have heard lots about this restaurant since I moved to the area. A friend and I went on New Years day and had a great experience. We were seated promptly, despite the crowd. The service was very quick. We ordered so much thinking we were going to get a little at a time, Oh No, it came very quickly! The rolls were about 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter and they were not all rice, huge! We got several types of roll, standard rainbow etc, and a special, all were wonderful! My only complaint was the california roll and spicy tuna roll were made with a crab or tuna salad, and since i dont like mayo I felt it was too much mayo. However there so many items to choose from that avoiding the standard california or tuna roll will be easy!
What a find!! Sakana rocks!!.
A friend recommended it as the best place for sushi over the past 18 yrs.
We got there at 5:30 pm on a Thursday - and there were people waiting. Hmmmm... not bad. Once seated, we had Tuna Tataki - tasty & elegant, w/ seaweed salad. The Crunchy Eel Roll is a masterpiece!! We had Red Storm - Spicy Tuna Roll w/ MOUNDS of spicy Salmon on each slice.. if you like hot - you will love this! Excellent. The Soft Crab Roll.... heaven. To finish - White Tuna sashimi & Salmon Roe Sushi with Quail Egg on each one!!
Although we live in north east valley, a drive down to the Elliot site for these treats is easy. Going back this Friday for Mackerel - which I hear is perfect!
THE BEST. I have been going for Sushi for years and found all three of the Sakana Restaurants about 3 years ago. The sushi is outstanding, the chefs are awesome as well as the service, cleanliness. Everything about Sakana's is exceptional. Give any of their locations a try. I've been to all three.
Unbelievable. We went here with another couple and This has got to be the best time I've had at a restaurant ever. Sushi was great. THe Tippan was un heard of.. We got the Steak and Shrimp Tippan. "PERFECT", the service was unbelievable and we have found our new favorite restaurant.. If you're looking to have fun with friends and great food at a great price. Sakana is where it is at.. Enjoy
