Phoenix >Food & Dining > Lovejoy's Kansas City Bar-B-Q
YES, GREAT NEWS, I wrote a bad review here a few weeks ago wondering if things would stay the way they were and how long the new owners could stay in business. Well, apparently they couldn't and Floyd and Juanita are coming back. They've taken the restaurant back over and will be re-opening on Oct. 23, 2008. We can't wait, but I've changed my rating from one star to five based on past performance by the old owners. They said they were re-doing things inside, but their old menu would be back.
Oh, I tried to edit my other review, but this site won't let me, nor would it allow me to post a new one, but I had to tell you all about this change.
Our favorite BBQ place in Phoenix is back, big time.
UPDATE: We went there last weekend, and oh boy, what a difference. Just like old times with the old flavors, tenderness and good service that we were used to. It's a pity that it took the Lovejoy's out of retirement, but obviously, they had pride it what they created and were not about to see it go down the tube because of what someone else had done.
No more bad reviews, just good food and a nice place to go.... again.....
Used to be very good, but not now. I used to go here all the time when Floyd and Juanita owned the place. In my opinion they had the best pork ribs in town. They were hands on owners who cared about the food they served and their customers. The place is not the same under the new owners. The service is relatively slow and the food is not near as good. The ribs, which used to be fall off the bone tender, were tough. I am so disappointed in what has happened to my favorite BBQ restaurant.
waitresses are great, but that's it. My nephews got dinner for free, and the waitresses are great! Those were the highlights. I wanted to tell the waitresses to go somewhere else because they could do so much better! My sister ordered the pork and said it was really fatty. I ordered the bbq chicken salad that was described as having tomatoes, cucumber, chicken, bbq sauce, and ranch dressing. All I received was a bowl of romaine lettuce and chicken. Nothing else. Not even bbq sauce. I did get three packages of dressing, but none of them were ranch. My sister asked about the fried okra - they were out. The special bread was a sourdough dinner roll. We overheard the waitresses telling others a list of food/drinks they didn't have but were listed on the menu (most of the bottled beers listed on the menu weren't available). Plus, we were told the food might take longer because the manager was working. Not impressed, and definitely won't go back.
Doesn't Compare to KC BBQ. Being from Kansas City I have had plenty of great BBQ. Lovejoys was definately not one of them. The ribs tasted like they were boiled and had no flavor throughout the meat and were very fatty, the burnt ends( which are a KC staple) are way to fatty but were ok, the sausage was alright nothing great , and the sides were nothing great. None of the meat had the great smoked KC flavor. If you like subpar bbq you could eat here.
Great food and service. Love the atmosphere and people along with the food we have been regulars for years and have always been high on Lovejoy's.
Darn good 'Q!.
I've been going to this place for quite a few years now, long before they moved to the newer (and nicer) building at 7th St & Bell. The BBQ here is rich and smokey, just like what you smell when you come in the door (There have been plenty of BBQ places that I've gone to in the past where what you smell is has more flavor than what you get on your plate).
I usually get their BBQ chicken basket which consists of BBQ chicken chunks in their sauce in a toasted bun, onion rings, and fries. The smoking process that they use dries out the chicken a little, so I use additional BBQ sauce. Combining this with their hot BBQ sauce on the side (spicy/sweet/smokey with lots of flavor) puts me in BBQ heaven!
A good value for the amount of food that you get.
Worth checking out!
Best barbecue around - not trendy just awesome.
I have traveled around the states extensively, and I love coming home to this place!! Nothing special about the restaurant or the service, just good old barbecue!. If you are concern with the food and not who you'll meet up with, this is the place to go!!
I have always found it busy at lunch, but definitely worth worth the wait.
I love this place!!!
Tough, reheated, bland.
Tough, reheated, and bland are the best adjectives I can use to describe this place. The inside is rundown and visibly old and worn inside. They only had 4 tables with customers at 7pm on Thursday and yet service was slow and impersonal.
The pork ribs I ordered were tough with heated BBQ sauce poured over the ribs which were cooked but still cool inside and had not been completely reheated. The sides of beans and slaw were VERY bland and tasted like they came straight out of a grocery store aisle.
If as another reviewer puts it this is REAL (Kansas City) BBQ then you can have it. I have learned my BBQ from Texas and I will take the sweet smoky, char-grilled taste of Texas BBQ anytime over the baked and re-heated taste of this food. You can get this stuff at Sizzler during their BBQ specials.
If you don't love this, you don't like Q. If Lovejoy's is not the best B-B Que joint you've had in a long time, then you have no idea what a good Que. Having lived in Kansas City for almost 4 years, and having the best they had to offer, I could not wait to come back to AZ to sink my teeth into their Burnt Ends Platter or what I love, the Hot Links sandwich. NBoth are mouthwatering, and the sauce makes it all even better. I pick up a bottle of sauce each time I go. Not only is it great, but the new location at 7th St and Bell Rd. is a much nicer establishment, with a great atmosphere more seating. For the reviewers who believe it is sub-par........go get your Barbeque in California.
