Oops! Did you say "good Mexican (style)?. I think the category for ths is "from fajitas to margaritas...(my) cities' most authentic Mexican fare." Can you say, "Taco Bell?" Well, then you are talking BETTER "Mexican" food than what Macayo's serves. Phoenix, the 5th largest city in the country--sporting the history of generations (hundreds, maybe thousands) of years of Sonoran peoples, has spectacularly delectable sources of truly authentic "Mexican" food. If you like GOOD food, let alone authentic, do NOT darken the doorstep of Macayo's. Don't punish your palate.
Macayos on T'bird. This is just another of Woody Johnson's places that serves over rated mex food with gringo designed dishes that are neither tasty or original. Bland, ordinary and same-o stuff.
Take it from me.... Take it from a real mexican...this place is horrible. Although Macayo's may have good drinks, atmosphere, and service...when it comes to the food, it is FAR from authentic. The rice & beans taste like it comes out of a box, and their sauces out of a can. And the most important mexican condiment (salsa, of course) tasted like marinara sauce..thick with absolutely NO spice or flavor. I wouldn't in my wildest dreams ever recommend this joke of a restaurant.
Not sure what makes them popular.. I have eaten at a Macayo's restaurant many, many times over the past decade. This is the location I have visited the most. A couple of things immediately stand out. One is that I have almost always had very good service from the wait staff here. What you come for, though, is of course the food. That's where I am confused as to why the Macayo's chain has been so popular for so long. The only really good meal that I have ever had there was a limited time special. Everything is just so mediocre. I would recommend several Mexican restaurants over this one.
Macayo's Makes the Grade. Even though there were 13 of us, and everyone ordered something different, the service was friendly, fun, fast . . . and accurate! The food was well prepared and extremely tasty -- and the chips and salsa are the best I've had in a long time. Definitely a "we'll be back" experience!
Best Macayo's in the valley. Ask for Ate (Ah-Tay)-he is the best of the best of the best. Tell him the mini chimi couple sent u. Great food & service--we go every weekend!
