Editorial Review for Char's Has the Blues – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
"Home away from home" is a good way to describe the mood in this former private residence. And when a favorite local band is playing, it's a full house. A staple of the Phoenix blues scene since the early '80s, Chars draws a good cross-section of age groups and backgrounds from throughout the Valley. The bar, dance floor and stage occupy a large room adorned in strands of Christmas lights, a pool table and cheap eats. Overall, it feels like a private party with some lavish hosts.

Small, Crowded, like something out of a movie. Stop by and see B*sh and Peter, the owners, and take a chance on who's tending bar. Service ranges from great to surly, depending on the night of the week and the wind direction. Cover, if any is usually cheap, drinks are average and the crowd is always enterataining. You know those freaky people in wierd outfits you see and wonder where they hang out? It's here - but in a good way. Mix is black, white, hispanic, young old, college, professional and straight up motha-f-in hustlas. I've actually seen a guy in a gold suit and matching gator shoes here. Neighborhood is not as scary as it looks, park free on the street right in front of the place. Musica starts at 9 most days, no one usually there until 10PM.

Pros: cheap fun easy parking middle of town

Cons: service is spotty, sound can be bad if teh owner tinkers with it too much

It is a lot of fun to listen to real live blues music played in front of you! You can dance on the dance floor and it is a total blast!!
